Look for Humpback Whales off the Big Island

Whale watching on the Big Island is one of those outings where you never quite know what the ocean is going to give you. The boat may cruise along quietly for a while, then someone spots a blow in the distance, a tail slips beneath the surface, or a humpback suddenly breaches and changes the whole mood on deck.

Depending on where you are staying, you can find departures from Kona, Honokohau Harbor, Keauhou Bay, Anaehoomalu Bay, Kawaihae Harbor, and Hilo. The boats vary too. Larger catamarans give you more room to move around and watch from different angles, while smaller boats and rafts keep you closer to the water and make the ride feel more active.

Big Island whale watching is seasonal, with the main period running through the winter months, generally from December through April. Since every trip depends on wild animals, no two cruises are exactly alike, and part of the fun is simply being out there watching the water.

Bring sun protection, a light layer for the breeze, and motion comfort if you tend to get seasick. A little patience helps too, because sometimes the best sighting comes after everyone has been scanning the horizon for a while.
