About Mauna Kea Deluxe Whale Watch (Kawaihae Harbor)
Winter on the Kohala Coast brings one of the Big Island’s most exciting seasonal sights: humpback whales moving through the warm waters offshore. This cruise departs from Kawaihae Harbor aboard Olohana, a 41-foot luxury powerboat with shaded seating, a stable ride and plenty of open views.
As you travel along the coast, keep watch for breaches, tail slaps and other whale activity while the crew shares insight into humpback migration and behavior. The route also passes lava cliffs, sea caves and quiet coves, and dolphins or other marine life may appear along the way.
Beyond the whales, the coastline itself is part of the experience. On clear days, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Hualalai rise in the distance, giving you a beautiful mountain backdrop for photos and time on the water.

Directions to Kawaihae Harbor-South:
From Hwy 19 bear left onto Hwy 270 (Akoni Pule Hwy). Head north briefly on Route 270, look toward the left for a green gate enclosing a port complex. Take the very first left into the green gate, following the sign for gate 1. Take an immediate left at the sign for gate 13. Follow the paved road over several speed bumps until the road ends at a gravel parking lot overlooking a dock. Makai will be the first boat on your left when you walk down the ramp. Look for a grey-and-black raft-style vessel.
