Winter along the Kohala Coast brings the chance to watch humpback whales moving through Hawaii's warm blue waters. Departing from Kawaihae Harbor aboard Olohana, a 41-ft luxury powerboat, this premium whale watch combines a smooth, stable ride with shaded comfort and wide-open coastal views.
As the boat cruises past lava cliffs, sea caves and secluded coves, keep watch for breaches, tail slaps and other whale activity. The expert crew shares fascinating insight into humpback migration, behavior and the marine life of the Big Island, while dolphins and other ocean wildlife may also appear along the way.
Panoramic views of Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Hualalai add another beautiful layer to the experience, with plenty of opportunities to capture the whales, coastline and mountain scenery from the water.

Directions to Kawaihae Harbor-South:
From Hwy 19 bear left onto Hwy 270 (Akoni Pule Hwy). Head north briefly on Route 270, look toward the left for a green gate enclosing a port complex. Take the very first left into the green gate, following the sign for gate 1. Take an immediate left at the sign for gate 13. Follow the paved road over several speed bumps until the road ends at a gravel parking lot overlooking a dock. Makai will be the first boat on your left when you walk down the ramp. Look for a grey-and-black raft-style vessel.
