Learn to Surf on Kauai’s South Shore

Trying to surf for the first time is a lot more fun when someone is there to help you read the water and make sense of the timing. Around Poipu, lessons start with the basics on shore before you head out and begin putting everything together one wave at a time.

Kauai Surf School and Poipu Beach Surf School both offer lessons on the south shore, with current sessions lasting about 1.5 to 2 hours. That gives you time to practice your stance, work on paddling, learn how to pop up, and get several chances in the water instead of feeling rushed through the experience.

You do not need to arrive knowing what you are doing. A big part of the lesson is getting comfortable with the board, the break, and the instructor’s safety guidance. Expect a few awkward attempts along the way; that is completely normal, and often part of the fun.

Bring a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, and clothes you do not mind getting soaked. Before booking, check the age requirements, swimming expectations, and whether you want a private or group lesson.
