About Poipu Beach Surf School - Kauai Surfing Lessons
Learn to surf on Kauai's sunny south shore with Poipu Beach Surf School, with ocean-safety instruction, land practice, board use and in-water coaching.
Catch your first wave or sharpen your skills with Poipu Beach Surf School on Kauai's south shore. Led by professional waterman and former bodyboarder Doug Muraoka, the school offers a welcoming, safety-focused experience for beginners, families and anyone ready to spend more confident time in the ocean.
Every lesson begins with a 10-15 minute land lesson video at check-in covering the surfboard, paddling, standing up and important ocean safety tips. The rest of the lesson is spent in the water, with lifeguard and CPR trained/certified instructors staying with you the entire time and never leaving you alone in the ocean.
Lesson Types
Group Lesson
Group lessons have 4 students per instructor.
Semi-Private Group Lesson
Semi-private lessons have 2-3 students per instructor and are a great option for friends or family who want a lesson with no one else.
Private Lesson
Private lessons are 1 student per instructor which gives you a more hands-on approach with your instructor and a less crowded line up. This option is also ideal and suggested for kids age 6-9.

After check-in, follow the instructor (driving) to the nearby beach parking lot to start the surf lesson.
Restrictions
Minimum age required is 10 years old for a group lesson, and 6 years old for a private and semi-private lesson.
All participants must be able to swim.
Special Notes
Make sure to have transportation. You'll stop by the check-in location for check-in and to view the safety video before driving over to the beach area (following instructor).
