Watch for Humpback Whales off Oahu

Winter adds a different kind of excitement to Oahu’s coastline. From about December through April, humpback whales return to Hawaii’s warm waters, and a whale watching cruise gives you the chance to look for them from the deck while enjoying a few hours out on the ocean.

You can leave from several parts of the island, and each one changes the view. Waikiki and Honolulu departures keep Diamond Head and the city skyline in the background, Haleiwa gives you the North Shore coastline, and West Oahu cruises head along the quieter leeward side of the island.

The boats vary too. Some cruises keep things simple and focus on the search, while others may include marine naturalists, hydrophones, drinks, or lunch. If you care about having more room to move around, shade, or a smaller-group feel, compare the boat style as closely as the departure point.

Whale activity is different every day, so there is always a little waiting and watching involved. That is part of the experience. One calm stretch of water can suddenly turn into a blow, a tail, or a breach that gets everyone on deck looking in the same direction.
