About Hilo Ocean Adventures - Royal Humpback Whale Experience
Winter brings humpback whales back to the waters around the Big Island, and Hilo offers a quieter place to watch for them from the boat. From mid-December through the end of March, keep an eye out for breaches, tail slaps and other surface activity as the whales spend the season in Hawaii’s warm waters.
Hilo Ocean Adventures departs from Hilo’s port and heads offshore in search of humpbacks in their natural habitat. The crew helps you understand what you are seeing along the way, adding context to the whales’ long migration from Alaska and their winter season in the islands.
If you want to add time in the water, the Whale Song Snorkel Package lets you snorkel while listening for humpback vocalizations beneath the surface. The package includes a snorkel set, fins and an optional life jacket.

Restrictions
Minimum Age: 8 years
Guests should be comfortable on a boat and prepared for ocean conditions. Light rain is common in Hilo and part of the adventure!
Whales are wild animals and sightings cannot be guaranteed. Although whales may be seen anytime from December–April, February typically offers the most consistent sightings. During the early and late season we also visit waterfalls up the coast in case whale sightings are low.
Special Notes
This is an ocean adventure outside the protection of the bay. Expect wind, ocean spray, and natural boat movement - you will likely get wet!
