Leave Kona behind for a day that follows the Big Island from high-elevation Saddle Road into lava country, rainforest and the changing landscapes around Kilauea. With a National Park Service certified guide handling the route, you can settle in for the drive while learning how Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Kilauea have shaped the island over time.

Near Hilo, you’ll stop at Kaumana Caves and step into part of the lava tube system created by the 1881 flow. From there, the day continues toward Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where the scenery shifts again into crater country, old lava flows and areas transformed by the 2018 eruption.

After lunch near Kilauea, head out on the roughly 3-mile Halema'uma'u trail for a closer look at the caldera and the terrain surrounding it. Later stops may include Mauna Ulu, where volcanic features such as Pele's tears and lava trees can be found, and Nahuku, a rainforest lava tube that shows another side of the island’s volcanic history.

The day wraps up with dinner in Volcano Village before the drive back to Kona, making this a full Big Island adventure with a mix of hiking, underground lava formations and national park scenery.
