KapohoKine Adventures – Elite Volcano Hike Hilo

Begin in Hilo and follow the story of Kilauea through lava caves, ancient flows and a crater landscape reshaped by the 2018 eruption. The first stop is Kaumana Caves, part of the lava tube system that carried lava to within 1.5 miles of downtown Hilo in 1881. Step inside the cathedral-like opening and take in the dark, dramatic space before continuing toward Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

After a picnic lunch, set out on the approximately 3-mile Halema'uma'u trail. The hike crosses ancient lava fields dating back to 1881 and descends toward the caldera floor, where the land changed dramatically during the 2018 eruption.

The tour continues to other fascinating areas of the park, including the Mauna Ulu lava flow, where you can look for Pele's tears and lava trees. You'll also visit the older Nahuku lava tube hidden in the rainforest before ending the day with dinner at one of the locals' favorite restaurants in Volcano Village.
