About Evening Volcano Explorer (from Kona)
Travel from the Kona side of the Big Island into volcano country with coffee farm scenery, Punalu'u, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, meals and possible lava glow viewing when conditions allow.
From Kona coffee country to black sand shores and the powerful landscapes of Kilauea, this evening adventure follows the Big Island through some of its most unforgettable scenery. Departing from the Kona side, the tour begins at Bay View Farm, a working coffee farm on the slopes of Mauna Loa above Kealakekua Bay.
Learn how Kona coffee is grown and prepared while sampling the farm's coffee at a beautiful overlook with views of Kealakekua Bay and the Captain Cook Monument. The tour then continues through South Kona and Ka'u, where dry forest and old lava flows create a striking contrast outside the vehicle's large picture windows.
A brief stop at Punalu'u Bake Shop offers the chance to visit the southernmost bakery in America, known for its Hawaiian sweetbreads since 1991. At Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, look for green sea turtles feeding offshore or resting on the dark volcanic sand.
The evening continues inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with visits to the Kilauea Visitor's Center, Volcano Art Center, Kilauea Iki overlook, Nahuku lava tube, Mauna Ulu, Steam Bluffs and Volcano House. Volcano House has welcomed guests such as Mark Twain and Jack London since 1864. If weather and conditions permit, the tour also includes lava glow viewing.
