North Shore ranch rides

Gunstock Ranch

Gunstock Ranch offers horseback rides, eco-tours, tree planting and off-road adventures on Oahu's North Shore, with small-group tours across a working ranch setting.

Gunstock Ranch

Gunstock Ranch spreads across 400 acres of rolling pastureland just inland from Laie on Oahu's North Shore. Family owned since 1973, the working cattle ranch puts horsemanship first: professional wranglers match you with a calm, sure-footed mount, review basic reins and cues and lead the way along shaded ironwood trails and open slopes that frame blue Pacific views in the distance. Groups top out at 12 riders, helmets come included and the pace stays at a relaxed walk, giving you time to breathe in the scent of guava and ironwood while listening to stories about paniolo culture and ranch life.

Standard trail rides run one or two hours, but the menu goes well beyond a simple loop. A Sunset Ride times your climb for golden light, then ends at a private campfire with s'mores and acoustic guitar. The popular Tree Planting Ride pauses mid-trail so you can tuck a native koa seedling into the soil—each tree is GPS-tagged, letting you check on its growth long after the vacation ends. Couples lean into privacy on a Sweetheart Ride that wraps up with sparkling cider and chocolate at a quiet lookout, while experienced riders can book an Advanced Ride that trots and lopes through open pasture.

Young wranglers start with hand-led Pony Rides inside a corral, and families who prefer wheels to hooves hop into side-by-side ATVs or electric mountain bikes to explore gulches, hidden bunkers and film locations from Jurassic franchise shoots. Whatever adventure you pick, guides carry first-aid kits, radios and deep local knowledge, turning every pause into a quick lesson on native plants, ranch history or island geology.

The ranch store sells cold drinks, local beef jerky and leather souvenirs, and free parking sits a short walk from the mounting arena. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required, weight limits apply for horseback experiences and riders aged seven and up can join the main trail program.
