The Umauma Experience

The Umauma Experience runs Big Island adventure tours at Umauma Falls, including a 9-line zipline over waterfalls, ATV rides, rappel tours and river activities.

The Umauma Experience

The Umauma Experience is located 16 miles north of Hilo on the lush Hamakua Coast, where the Umauma River tumbles through three tiers of waterfalls and jungle cliffs that beg to be crossed by cable, paddle or throttle. You check in at the open-air visitor center on Old Mamalahoa Highway, pull on a full-body harness or grab a helmet, and follow your guide into 200 private acres that stay off-limits to everyone except tour guests.

Ziplining is the star. Nine dual cables stretch more than two miles in total, including a 2,060-foot monster that sends you racing 65 mph above a 300-foot gorge—a side-by-side flight so friends can swap selfies mid-air. Automatic gravity brakes handle the stopping, leaving your hands free for GoPro high-fives while you skim past ferns, river rapids and the famous triple falls.

Zip 'n Dip adds cool water to the rush. After the morning flight you trade harness for life jacket and paddle a kayak or SUP board around a turquoise lagoon fed by a 40-foot cascade. Guides fire up the grill for kalua pork sliders and fresh pineapple while you cliff-jump or float lazy circles under the spray.

ATV and UTV tours put you behind the wheel of a 4×4 side-by-side for five muddy miles of ranch track, fern tunnels and splashy river crossings. Each stop doubles as a quick lesson in island geology—lava tubes here, old sugar flumes there—and a chance to frame Umauma Falls from viewpoints no rental car can reach.

Rappel and River Walks keep the pace slower but no less scenic. You clip into top-rope gear, back over a 40-foot cliff and land beside a river pool where guides lay out deli wraps and cold drinks before a gentle hike through botanical gardens filled with torch ginger and blue jade vine.

Every activity includes gear, reef-safe sunscreen, bottled water and guides certified in CPR and first aid. Weight limits range from 35 to 275 pounds for ziplines and 5 years old and up for ATV passengers. Free parking and clean restrooms wait at the visitor center, and lockers keep phones dry until you are ready to film waterfall selfies on the suspension bridge.
