Kohala Eco Ventures – Kohala UTV Adventure
Guided Kohala UTV adventure with rugged trails, ranch scenery and Big Island views.
View Tour →Kohala UTV Adventure runs guided UTV tours from Hawi into private North Kohala lands, with Pololu Valley rim views, streams, waterfalls and Hawaiian history.
Kohala UTV Adventure trades pavement for red-dirt ranch roads on the Big Island's north tip, giving you the wheel of a two- or four-seat utility terrain vehicle built to climb hills, cross shallow streams and splash through sticky sugar-estate mud. Check in at the Hawi base yard, slip on the provided helmet and goggles, and follow your guide on a 12-mile loop across 2,400 private acres once planted in cane.
The first leg climbs grassy slopes where black Angus cattle graze under open sky. You pause at ridge lookouts to catch your breath—and the trade-wind view—while the guide points out Maui's Haleakala rising beyond the 'Alenuihaha Channel. From there the trail drops into ironwood forest and fern-lined gulches, bouncing over rutted switchbacks that keep the grin factor high but the pace family-friendly. Each stop doubles as a quick lesson on paniolo history, native reforestation and the engineering that carried flumes of water to thirsty cane fields a century ago.
Mid-tour, engines shut down beside a hidden waterfall that tumbles into a cold, clear pool. You can wade in for photos, snack on chilled pineapple and swap driver seats before tackling the second half of the course. The return leg hugs the rim of dramatic Kohala valleys carved by 500 inches of annual rain, and on clear days you spot the silver line of Pololu's black-sand beach far below.
Your package includes DOT-approved helmets, goggles, disposable bandanas, bottled water and rain ponchos when the mist drifts in. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required, and drivers must be 21 or older with a valid license. Passengers as young as five can ride, strapped into high-back seats with automotive-style belts that keep the bumps fun instead of jarring.
The entire experience runs about 2.5 hours dock to dock, leaving you plenty of daylight for a Hawi lunch stop or a quick side trip down to Pololu Valley Lookout. Ready to trade cruise-control speeds for dirt-track thrills? Secure your steering wheel on our selection of Big Island activities and round out the day with stargazing, waterfalls or whatever else calls you beyond the paved road.
