About Mauna Kea Observatory Private Tour
Climb high above the Big Island in the comfort of a private SUV and watch the landscape change as you ascend more than 9,000 feet toward the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy. Mauna Kea, often called the "White Mountain" because snow sometimes covers its summit, offers a striking mix of volcanic scenery, open skies and sweeping island views.
At the Onizuka Center, learn about the sacred importance of Mauna Kea and its role as home to some of the world's most advanced telescopes. Along the way, look for rare endemic plants that have adapted to this high-altitude environment and take time to enjoy the quiet beauty of the mountain.
With up to six guests per vehicle, this private tour offers a more personal and flexible experience. The tour is fully customizable, with the option to add stops for a meal, coffee or other attractions within your designated time.

Where & When
Pick-up and return is from Kona hotels. Available departure times are 9:00 am, 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm.
Restrictions
Cancellation Policy: Cancellations made outside of 48 hours from service day are subject to a 10% cancellation fee. Cancellations made less than 48 hours from service day are non-refundable.
Altitude Warning:
Maunakea Observatory is 9,200 feet (2,800 m) above sea level. Due to the elevation, please carefully review the health conditions before booking.

Due to the health risks associated with high altitude, the following individuals are not eligible for this tour:

Respiratory conditions
Pregnant women
Participants must not have engaged in scuba diving within 24 hours of the tour
Special Notes
This 6-hour private tour is fully customizable within your designated tour time and includes two pre-determined stops at Maunakea Onizuka Observatory.
The amount of time spent at each stop within the 6-hour charter is customizable. Drive time to Mauna Kea from Kona is 1.5 hours on average each way.
