About Evening Volcano Explorer (from Hilo)
Head from Hilo into an evening Big Island volcano tour with lava landscapes, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, dinner and possible lava glow viewing when conditions allow.
Follow the story of Kilauea from Hilo's historic waterfront to lava-covered villages, a newly formed black sand beach and the dramatic landscapes of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Led by a National Park Service certified guide, this evening adventure brings the Big Island's volcanology, geology, history, flora and fauna into focus along the way.
Travel through picturesque Hilo before continuing to the old fishing village of Kalapana and nearby Kaimu Beach, both transformed by lava flows. Walk across the lava field to the new black sand beach, then visit the Star of the Sea Painted Church, which was moved by the community twice to protect it from advancing lava in 1990. The decommissioned church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The tour continues into Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with visits to the Kilauea Visitor's Center, Kilauea Iki Crater Overlook, steaming bluffs and Volcano House, where broad views open across Kilauea Caldera. You will also hike to cracks and sinkholes left in paved roads by the historic eruption of 2018. If weather and conditions permit, the evening may include lava glow viewing.
