KapohoKine Adventures – Evening Volcano Explorer (From Hilo)

Spend the evening following the story of Kilauea from Hilo’s historic waterfront to lava-covered communities, a newer black sand beach and the changing landscapes inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Your National Park Service certified guide shares the geology, history, native plants and wildlife that help explain how this part of the Big Island has been shaped over time.

The route passes through Hilo before continuing to Kalapana and Kaimu, where past lava flows dramatically changed the coastline. You’ll walk across the lava field toward the black sand beach and visit the Star of the Sea Painted Church, which was moved by the community to protect it from advancing lava.

Inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, stops include the Kilauea Visitor's Center, Kilauea Iki Crater Overlook, Steam Bluffs and Volcano House. You’ll also see cracks and sinkholes left behind by the 2018 eruption. If weather and current conditions cooperate, the evening may also include a chance to see lava glow.
