Open-range riding in North Kohala

Na'alapa Stables

Na'alapa Stables leads Big Island horseback rides at Kahua Ranch, a North Kohala working ranch with open pastures, coastline views and paniolo-style riding.

Na'alapa Stables

North Shore Stables is located on a stretch of coastal pastureland near Waialua, where ocean breeze rolls through ironwood trees and open space stretches all the way to Mokuleia Beach. Family owned and operated, the stable focuses on relaxed, small-group experiences that introduce you to Hawai'i's paniolo heritage without rushing you past the view.

Horses here are calm and sure-footed, matched to each rider by height and temperament after a quick arena warm-up. Helmets and mounting blocks come standard, guides review simple rein cues, and the pace stays at an easy walk so you can scan for sea turtles in the shore break or spot tropicbirds gliding over the low ridges inland. Younger guests start with hand-led pony rides inside a fenced paddock, and a small petting zoo—goats, sheep, miniature donkeys—keeps non-riders happy while the rest of the family heads out on trail.

The property's broad acreage also supports low-impact ATV loops and sunset wagon rides, both run in the same small-group style and led by staff who share stories of sugar cane days, royal fishing grounds and modern conservation efforts along O'ahu's North Shore.

Every tour includes helmets, bottled water and guides certified in first aid and CPR. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required for horseback sessions; weight and age limits keep both rider and horse comfortable. Free parking and clean restrooms sit steps from the mounting arena, and shaded picnic tables invite you to linger over a packed lunch while horses cool down under open-air showers.
