Dolphin Excursions

Each vessel carries no more than 22 guests, creating plenty of elbow room for snorkel gear and camera bags. Coast Guard–licensed captains double as marine naturalists, opening the excursion with a briefing on federal dolphin-viewing guidelines before throttling up for the search offshore. Spinner dolphins often appear within minutes, their tight aerial spins and synchronized swimming easy to film from the raft's open sides. Between December and April, towering blows on the horizon signal migrating humpbacks, and pilot whales or melon-headed whales sometimes join the checklist.

After watching dolphins on their own terms, the captain turns toward coral gardens sheltered by the Wai'anae Range. Masks, fins, foam noodles and even shortie wetsuits come included, and at least one guide stays in the water to point out green sea turtles, parrotfish and occasional octopus hiding among lava ledges. Visibility regularly tops 80 feet, and reef-safe sunscreen in pump bottles keeps both skin and coral protected.

The ride back hugs volcanic sea cliffs scarred by blowholes and sea caves that larger boats can only admire from a distance. Freshwater rinse hoses wash away salt before the raft noses gently against the harbor ramp. Digital photos shot by the crew are available for purchase the same day, making it easy to relive dolphin leaps and underwater high-fives long after towels dry.
