Kauai Backroads is a half day, four wheel drive tour which takes place on the private
roads of the 22,000 acre Grove Farm Plantation. Behind locked gates, this adventure
gives you exclusive access to scenic and historic areas of Kauai.

From the top of Kilohana Crater, through the cane tunnel to the rugged coastline of Mahaulepu, our expert guides explore with you, the hidden beauty of Kauai.

Tours depart daily at 8:00 and 1:00 from Kilohana, the home of Gaylords Restaurant.
The price of the tour including local taxes is $50.00 for adults and $43.75 for children
12 and under.
Kauai Backroads departs from Kilohana,
the home built by Gaylord Wilcox in 1935. Kilohana is now the home of Gaylord?s Restaurant and numerous shops. The tour covers 33 miles of mostly private roads and follows a figure 8 route.
We cover the area from the top of Kilohana Crater to the rugged coastline of Mahaulepu. We pass through the cane tunnel built in 1947 and 1948 to take miles off the round trip to the mill and harbor for the cane trucks.

Kilohana Crater is 1250 feet in elevation. Its height is deceptive because of the gently
sloping sides of the crater. On the way up, the vegetation changes from sugar, to rat
berries and guava, to a mixed pine and bamboo forest. Wild orchids sprout beside the
road. From the east viewpoint, you can see into the bowl of the crater about one half
mile across. Now filled with vegetation the area is home to wild pigs. From the
viewpoint on the western rim of the crater, you get a 360 degree view of the eastern
part of the island. From the Anahola Ridge, Kapaa, Wailua, Lihue, Puhi, Mt. Haupu,
Knudsens Gap, Mt. Kahili and Mt. Waialeale. It makes your head spin. Passing trade
showers often oblige us with rainbows and waterfalls.

As we wind our way down the back side of Kilohana towards the rest area, our expert guides elaborate on the formation of the islands, the migration of the Polynesians,
Hawaiian history and culture, the sugar industry and diversified agriculture. The
typical tour has 10 or fewer passengers. The small groups and the comfortable
vehicles make for an interactive tour. Your questions are welcomed and the
conversation can focus on areas of your particular interest.

After a short stop for refreshments, we pass by scenic Papuaa reservoir at the base
of Mt. Kahili and check out the bunkers built in the area during WWII. There is a tree
farm in this area which is a fascinating story in itself. Albezia trees fix nitrogen in the
soil and stimulate the growth of the crop tree which is a type of eucalyptus.

The cane tunnel is a prominent point of interest on this tour. Built after WWII by
McBryde Sugar, the tunnel through Haupu Ridge saved many miles for the haul cane
trucks heading to the Koloa mill and the trucks delivering raw sugar to Nawiliwili
Harbor. The climate is drier on the south side of Haupu Ridge. Seed corn and coffee
dominate now where sugar used to grow.

Mahaulepu is a beautiful area of rugged coastline and pristine beaches, still on Grove
Farm land. The tour returns to Kilohana through Koloa, Hawaii?s oldest plantation
town. Koloa translates long cane. As you return you will be amazed at how much you
have seen and learned in only four hours. Bring a camera, lots of film and an
inquisitive mind.

Tours depart from Kilohana seven days a week. Check in time is at 7:45 for the
morning 8:00 departure and at 12:45 for the afternoon tour. The price of the tour,
including local taxes, is $50.00 for adults and $43.75 for children 12 and under.
Reservations are required usually at least 24 hours in advance.

South shore tour description:

Hotel pick ups begin at 8:30 AM in Kapaa. People staying on the north shore meet us at Kauai Village shopping center in Kapaa, or some other convenient location. We are
picking up in the Lihue area around 9:00 and Poipu by 9:30. We arrive at our snorkel
destination shortly thereafter. Getting there is half the fun. Getting to know your guide
and learn about the island on the way there and back is an important part of the tour.

Our first snorkel spot is usually at Lawai Beach by the Beachhouse Restaurant. The
reef is 50 yards or so from shore and the water inside the reef is about 8 to 10 feet
deep. We spend most of the time on this first snorkel hovering over the reef in just a
few feet of water. There is a great variety of species here including, butterfly fishes,
tangs and surgeon fishes, wrasses and puffers. We are in the water for up to 45
minutes before taking a break. After we are refreshed, those who are comfortable with
a slightly more advanced snorkel, accompany us to the second area where we see the
pacific green sea turtles.

After a shower and snacks we will start our return trip. This is when you get to view the
video which was being taken by the tour leader during the tour and when you realize
the importance of looking good doing it.

The tour returns to the Poipu area around 12:30, to Lihue around 1:00 and Kapaa by
1:30.

North shore tour description:

People staying in the Poipu area meet us in Lihue at 8:00, we are picking up in Kapaa
around 8:30, Princeville around 9:00 and arriving at the snorkel spot by 9:30. The drive
from Princeville to Haena is one of the most picturesque you will ever see.

Makua, or tunnels as it is known, is a gorgeous beach with Bali Hai as a backdrop. The
inner reef is volcanic and has a large shallow area that leads out to a drop off. In
places the depth changes from 3 feet to 60 feet, straight down. There are lava tubes
and underwater caves which create habitat for a variety of marine life. We follow the
natural contours of the reef exploring as we go. There are only a few places where you
can head for shore without getting into very shallow water so we return to our entry
point to exit.

Conditions, and your stamina permitting, we will tour the area inside the outer reef for
our second snorkel.

After showers, drinks and snacks we?ll head back. Again, the video provides
entertainment. We should be back in Princeville around 1:00, Kapaa 1:30 and Lihue by 2:00.

Tour prices, including local taxes are $68.75 for adults and $52.50 for children ages
5 to 12 years.
