and time. On your way to the summit you'll learn about the remarkable
evolution and changes the Big Island has experienced. Our dinner
stop at a historic ranch outpost features a hot, picnic style
dinner. After dinner we make our way to the summit.
Sunset
at the Summit
Once at the summit you are afforded spectacular views of the horizon,
Haleakala on Maui, Mauna Kea's world-class array of telescopes
and the famous Mauna Kea sunset. Here you'll experience the spiritual
energy of what many Hawaiians believe to be the most sacred place
in all the islands. At the summit you stand on top of the world's
tallest mountain which rises from the ocean floor to more than
31,000 feet in elevation. In your hooded parka, you'll stand in
awe at both nature's sublime creation and man's astonishing technological
achievements.
Star
Gazing & Talking Story
After sunset we descend back down to the 9000-foot elevation next
to the Visitor Information Station. Here we set up our own telescope
and have a sky party. Wrapped warm in Arctic parkas, with hot
beverages and chocolate macadamia nut cookies, you'll marvel at
the brilliance of the Hawaiian sky. Enjoy as your Naturalist Guide's
entertaining talk story of the infinite world of the observable
universe offers you a personal and educational look at the heavens.

across the fascinating landscape of the Big Island. At the Hawaii
Volcanoes, you'll enjoy the “must see” places within
the Park while you learn about their geological and historic significance.

Inside
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Once at the park you'll walk through a magnificent native rainforest,
visit a lava tube, discover remarkable volcanic formations and
experience a splendid diversity of geography and climate. Through
detailed geologic and natural history interpretation, small walks,
and driving, you'll explore and learn about the world’s
most active volcano. A picnic lunch is served en route during
your adventure through the park. Depending on what’s happening
with the active flow at Kilauea, we’ll head to see the red
lava flows.
Get the Big Picture of the Big Island
Starting from Kona, you'll travel along the coast over old lava
flows before proceeding up the rolling pasturelands on the flanks
of Mauna Kea. Turning onto the Saddle Road, between Mauna Loa
and Mauna Kea, you’ll traverse a dramatic and diverse landscape
of ranchland, sub alpine dryforest and striking volcanic features
before stopping for a short break and continental-style breakfast.
Afterward,
you'll drop down to near sea-level on the way through Hilo where
you begin the final climb to the summit of Kilauea and the lush
entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. On the way back, you'll
travel along the Hamakua Coast and pass through Waimea before
returning to Kona.

hikes may be required if an active lava flow is accessible.
